As an unexpected father, I was suddenly thrown into the world of babies and prams and mums groups and all of those things. It seems over the last years that I have entered a new world that I never knew existed. Chatting to tattoed muscle men over the barbeque about which play mat they thought was more entertaining for their little girl.
It also seems that once you have a baby that you become automatically aware of everyone elses babies and who’s having one next. You also go to all of these first birthday parties and baby showers and other freaked out gatherings you would have avoided like the plague in the past.
Something that comes along with all of that is buying baby gifts. With such an abundance of weird and wonderful things that babies seem to need these days, the choices for gifts are endless.
My suggestion is to go with practical items, toys or decorative baby gifts. These are things that you can generally never have enough of as a parent.
Parents love to dress their babies in different clothes all of the time. Like your own clothes , that get boring if you wear the same things all the time, it gets boring putting the same clothes on your child often. So giving baby clothes as gifts is a great solution. My advice is to choose sizes that you think will be a little bit big.
There is this whole baby clothes swapping underbelly going on, where your friends and family will love to give you all the baby clothes they don’t need any more. So having enough is usually not a problem. When we pick baby clothing for our friends, we try to match the style of the parent, not create a style for the baby or kid. To be honest, babies don’t care to much what’s on their t-shirt.
As I mentioned, there are a lot of second hand clothes going around. These clothes are always great for around the house, but it is always nice to have a few new clothes for when you go to the birthday parties and all those sort of gatherings like I mentioned.
All of the practical stuff make good presents too. From socks to baby spoons, bibs, to baby wipes and even nappies. All of these things get used every day by the parents, so it never hurts to have a few more around within easy reaching distance wherever you may need them.
I don’t think many people struggle to have enough toys. Everyone gives you toys. Noisy ones, educational ones, fun ones and duds. You will get them all. Because of this I don’t usually buy toys.
Lastly decorations are one of my favourite gifts. This includes paper and crayons and all those arty items, aswell as wall stickers and dangly things babies seem to love. They brighten up the room and teach kids about creativity.
